Rubber tree (Hevea Brasiliensis)


Rubber is one of the most important products to come out of the rain forest, the environmentally friendly forest trees although it has been planted as a plantation crop for latex with wood as a side-product.

A typical rain forestry that would efficiently function in carbon-Sequestration is observed through the up take of Carbon Dioxide from the atmosphere and it's conversion into cellules and organic matter.

Today nearly 50 – 60% of every auto tire and 100% of all aircraft tires are made of natural rubber.


     
Planting of Rubber
The ideal season for planting is before the on set of wet weather or the monsoons. A rain fall of 2000mm-3000mm and a temperature of
700F-800F is ideal for cultivation of rubber
   
Planting and Raising of a Rubber Plant
Planting is done 14feet x 15feet on a contour system resulting in 500 plants per hectare. A rubber plant will approximately take 6-7years to bring into tapping of latex  
Tapping of Latex
A rubber tree brought into tapping from 6-7years from planting when the trees attained a girth of 18-20inches or a diameter of 6-7inches at a height of approximately 3feet from the union.
   
Tapping
The tapping system which is usually adopted in Sri Lanka is one spiral cut on half the circumference of the tree. A slope of a cut from high left to low right is 25-300 from the horizontal. This angle enables a quick flow of latex down the cut on the bar.
Latex Rubber
The most important factor of plantation of rubber is cleanliness at all stages of preparation. And this is no more less important in field operation than in the factory.
