SOCIAL RESPONSIBITY

Our Connection With The Workers
Supplying the cleanest and the most hygienic purest tea to the market is much more then Adopting to the market conditions. Adawatte and Finlays strongly believes in building mutually beneficial relationships with the workers and the communities with whom we work and are taking an integrated approach to building relationships with the workers and communities around the plantation.

Social development programs
Investing in social programs to build and maintain and support housing facilities, medical care, baby day care centers, education and computer literacy training and taking workers on a yearly pilgrimage to a place of worship to build the bond between the workers and us and organize sports activities at regular intervals.

Income
We have structured the incentive packages to help our tea harvesters and support personnel to take a bigger take home income in order to support their families.

Access to affordable credit
Providing tea harvesters and support personnel access to affordable credit through various advances or loan funds so that they invest in their success into the future

Training
With the help of Finlays, tea research institute, rubber research institute and estate level programms provide technical support and training that promotes high-quality tea, quality rubber, quality fuel wood for the future.
           
Environment
Carbon emission replacement

Adawatte with the guidance of Finlays is planting 15 hectares (35.05 acres) of rubber 15 hectares (35.05acres) of plantation forestry timber, fuelwood per year from 2006 to 2012.

Certified Tea
Adawatte has been awarded certificate of compliance for adhering to the areas defined by ETP; employment (including minimum age and wage levels) education, maternity, health & safety, housing and basic rights. ETHICAL TEA PERTNESHIP monitors living and working conditions on tea estates, with the aim of marking sure that the TEA you buy has been produced in a socially responsible way.
INTERNATIONL ORGANIZATION FOR STANDARDIZATION (ISO) 9001, 22005 CERTIFIED HAZARD ANALYSIS AND CRITICAL CONTROL (HACCP) CERTIFIED


Commitment Towards Ethical and Social Standards

Worker Rights

  • Employment is freely chosen
  • Freedom of association and right to collective bargaining are respected
  • Working conditions are safe and hygienic
  • Total remuneration packages are negotiated between unions and employers
  • Agreements are in place regarding working hours

Human Rights
  • Child labor is not used
  • No harsh or inhumane treatment is allowed
  • No discrimination is practiced

Community Health

O.P.D(Out Patient Treatment)

People get O.P.D Treatments daily free of charge and cost is born by the estate.

Antenatal care
From conception to confinement of the pregnant mothers requirement of medical care, medical advice, drugs, and patient transport etc., provided by the estate

Children’s Immunization
All the estate workers children and their dependents are vaccinated by the estate medical staffs, accordantly to the W.H.O. schedule.

Vaccines are as follows

  • D.T.P. – 1st, 2nd, 3rd 4th doses at consequently 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, and 18 months.
  • O.P.V. 1st, 2nd, 3rd ,4th  , 5th  doses at consequently 2 months, 4 months, 6 months ,18 months & Year 5
  • Hepatitis B 1st, 2nd, 3rd doses at consequently 2 months, 4 months, 6 months,      
  • Measles Vaccine – at 9 months
  • Measles and Rubella Vaccine – at year 3
  • D.T. vaccine – at year 5
  • Provide sanitary facilities like toilets, pure drinking water, roofing sheets etc., by the estate.
  • Anti rabies campaigns with help of Ministry Of Health once in six months
  • De-worming programs

Provide worm treatment to the estate community over the age of 2 years, once in three months.

Nutrition and home garden

  • Estate has provided the required vegetable seeds to maintain a home garden and convince peoples to get a balance diet from their own home garden


Prevention of HIV Aids and STI Diseases

  • Conducted a number of awareness programmes for some estates in our drop-In center and trained 40 volunteers to implement projects regularly in their estates
  • We have a health camp once in six months to provide medicines, spectacles, Haring aids etc with the help Ministry of  Health Sri Lanka      

Corruption

Land Rights
  • Workers are provided with 7perches or 1906 square feet for construction of new housing as a freehold block of land transferable to dependents or any one of their choice

Adawatte with the aggressive CSR approach from 2006 or so has change the workers lethargic and non cooperative attitude to more a team participation co-owners of co-operate body approach which has resulted in the betterment of the plantation the environment and last but not the workers and the community as a whole.
